The beginning of a new design…

I have an ever-expanding list of inspirational statements collected through the years, from scribbles to screen grabs to digital recordings, but the theme is amazing people through adversity finding her/his higher self to the benefit of self and others.

When I begin a new design, I really do have a person(s) who exemplifies the statement I am creating supporting artwork. For example, our Make Waves design is dedicated to Malala Yousafzai and for Never Ever Ever Give Up, my main muse is Shirley Chisholm.

The process of creating typography and artwork…

It is an extremely iterative process that begins with simple hand drawings pieced together in experimentation to learn what art elements and typography style best supports the intention. It takes weeks with many versions of the design to reach a point that best represents the expression and person.

I do not follow trends of the moment or try to fit in with any style because what we represent are enduring goals (and people) who withstand the test of time. Always inspirational and admirable.

The finished design and production…

The final statement piece requires over 25 hours of handcrafted artisanship with each hair-on hide artwork is its own piece, small variations of color and texture emphasize the uniqueness brimming with originality and spirit.
